REPLACED Exclusive Review Gameplay | New Side-Scrolling 2.5D CYBERPUNK with Brutal Batman Combat
📝 SUMMARY
✒️ DESCRIPTION
Set in an alternate-history 1980s America (specifically Phoenix-City), the story takes place in a world scarred by a nuclear catastrophe, the twist being that the US detonated the bombs on its own soil at the end of WWII. You play as R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence that has been forcibly and unwillingly "replaced" into a human body. The narrative follows your struggle to adapt to human emotions and physical limitations while uncovering the dark conspiracies of the Phoenix Corporation.
🏆 THE WAIT IS OVER... AND WORTH IT
Replaced makes a strong first impression with its striking dystopian world, a post-apocalyptic future where society has split apart. The poorest, along with anyone who pushes back against the system, have been pushed to the edges, left to fend for themselves in a harsh, broken landscape.
The story takes its time, and that works in its favor. It’s backed by a really strong audiovisual presentation, where every frame, lighting choice, and effect feels intentional.
Gameplay-wise, Replaced keeps things approachable. The platforming is simple and forgiving, while combat focuses on dodging, countering, and well-timed hits. It starts off fairly straightforward, but the growing number of enemies ramps up the challenge, in a way that feels reminiscent of the Batman Arkham series.
Replaced takes its time, letting its story and atmosphere fully breathe, best experienced at a slower, more deliberate pace.
🚀 RTX 5090 REVIEW
Even though Replaced features a pixel art style, its technical complexity within Unity 6 is remarkably high. We noted that using an RTX 5090 impacts the experience in several key areas. While the aesthetic is pixelated, the game utilizes 2.5D with high asset density. Our high-end PC allowed us to play in native 4K effortlessly; this eliminates shimmering (edge flickering) and ensures that post-processing effects, such as atmospheric dust and volumetric smoke, look incredibly crisp. Unlike 16-bit games of the past, every pixel in Replaced reacts to light in a 3D space. The game leverages advanced lighting systems within Unity 6.
💡 WHY IT WORKS
Atmosphere: A striking dystopian world brought to life with meticulous detail and a strong audiovisual identity.
Free-Flow Combat: Heavily inspired by the Batman: Arkham series. It features timing-based counters, dodges, and melee-to-ranged finishers that feel fluid and heavy.
Platforming and Exploration: Draws inspiration from titles like Inside and Prince of Persia, focusing on cinematic movement and environmental puzzles.
Calm Pacing: A narrative that takes its time, letting the story and world draw you in.
